 is supposed to be older than the other kids, but the film handles this rather awkwardly, and is late in making good use of it. Though the film finally comes around a bit in its final third, <STRONG>Marc Rosenberg’s screenplay is extremely problematic, and Rod Hardy’s direction seems to count heavily on an audience being predisposed to find this coming-of-age tale both utterly fascinating and somehow stirringly original</STRONG>. Neither is the case. Also, and I’ll have to check on this, but I think the movie probably had to have a fly wrangler. <EM>December Boys</EM> opens September 14 in New York and Los Angeles, from Warner Independent, and expands nationwide on September 28.</DIV></p>
