It’s a happy birthday to Emmy Rossum, who turns 21 today, and probably needs the well wishes.
the bizarre amount of hate out there for Rossum — everything from distorted Photoshop fun to several decently-trafficked forums dedicated to smearing everything from her singing to the way she comes across in interviews. I suppose it’s owing chiefly to her casting/performance in the screen version of The Phantom of the Opera (what’s to parse, really, about Poseidon?), a project about which there are deeply and passionately held opinions. Still, such “high negatives,” in the vernacular of the political arena, certainly don’t bode well for prospects of a sustained popular career. Young women seem particularly to resent Rossum, which is strange, because with Hollywood for the moment back in love with musicals, she should be taking off. Instead, that film career is on hold for the moment, and though I know Broadway is in the mix, peddling an Internet-only, self-described pop album (Inside Out, from Geffen) hardly seems like part of the most routinely prescribed regimen of effective recovery.
So, errr… drink up, Emmy! Legally, now.
What a peculiar site and comment. We check some sites (my asst.) when we are casting a high end film. Rossu is very popular in fanland and the industry. She is presently negotiating three films and a Broadway lead. Someone has been misleading with negative sites and press.
Those sites just show how immature some people can be. So sad.
I would love to see how Emmy does on Broadway. Really. It would warm my heart, to hear her strong, powerful, beautiful voice shows us how a Broadway show SHOULD be sung.
While I’m at it, I might as well toss in that I would LOVE to hear her amazing duets with Pavarotti, and Domingo, from those years at the Met. Oh, wait, she didn’t do a duet? She sang in the chorus with 80 other kids? Oh, see, now that makes sense. How many offers does she have to come BACK to the Met? NONE.
I sincerely hope Emmy gets all three of those films she’s negotiating, so more of Hollywood can be inundated with her obnoxious, holier than thou attitude. The more people who see what an ax wound she really is, the better! I will be interested to see if these cinematic masterpieces turn into major blockbusters, as well as if she will emote more than three faces: shock and horror, blank admiration, and confusion. I doubt it, if Emmy is going to be a star.
Seriously, I’m amazed at how blind people can be. I’m sure Emmy is just fabulous to most people, but how about getting a real vocal teacher or a real opera singer to evaluate her performance? That would be great publicity stunt, Emmy proving her greatness to the world.
I won’t even touch on her attitude, but I will say this: Weekends at the Hamptons, Harry Winston diamonds, private schools, Upper East Side, and now she’s “under privileged”? This girl is so out of touch it’s unbelievable.
Oh, and ask any of the girls who went to Spence with her, and they’ll tell you Miss Emmy wasn’t the martyr she paints herself to be. Rather, she alienated herself by pretending to be better than everyone.
She’s lucky she’s got the opportunities ahead of her that she does. IF she had to start from scratch and “make it”, it wouldn’t happen.
I don’t need to respond to the clear haters on here. They always say the same things. She started as much from scratch as many.
I will simply say this. We are among another group of people with whom she worked twice. She was the ultimate professional. She continues to study acting and music. Her music is growing into quite a success. Broadway (and many there) welcome here. She has 1 15-20 million project offered to her. There are the three films that producer noted- however, we know specifically of at least 17 films offered and two accepted beyond those three. More people than you can image respect and love the lady. You will just to hate her. We will all enjoy her kindness, star making charisma, and the goodness she has offered many of us.
You can talk to those who choose to hate. I write this for the supporters. You will see some amazing works very soon beyond the wonderful music. Thanks for supporting her!

Hey,I was one of those Spence girls and I struggled to be there. I faced a lot of snobs and B’s! Emmy Rossum was NOT one of them. She was very nice to me. I know her to this day. I wish her a lot of great things. Good for her. Love your new CD, Emmers.
God, a hate site again on some acting people. Don’t care one iota about this rossum babe. But, why don’t hateful people just shut the h- up and go moan somewhere else. You get off on being a B!
Keira Knightley (here in UK and at our home in Ca.) has been constantly called a B and difficult. Word around is she is one cold, arrogant, user. People in the arts will always be marked horrible or wonderful. A lot of people hate KK and love her. Believe me! Same for Rossum. Thay are both working. Rossum (if you have been reading a lot lately on her) has a plateful with music, a lot of movies on board (hey don’t wish them ill to get to her,yuck), and that big Broadway show. People in a lot of power are putting up a LOT of money for her. So, somebody likes her a lot. There are people who think she has a lot of talent and potential to be a major star. I just read she has enough films and theatre and musi clined up to keep her rising for the next 15 years. No kidding. So, why spend time hating these people. Is it really that much fun. I think,too people interpret interviews they way they want to…I think she seems fine. Confident. What’s the big deal? Depp is really popular. You’d be amazed at his miserable personality and his ‘habits’. Some cover better than others. Brightman-ugh…we could go on and on. Guess it opinion. That’s just me two cents worth. I wish her well. Why not? Doesn’t hurt me. I think hating someone does. This sounds like hate from some people.
My dad is a film editor in California. He has worked at several major studios for years. He worked with Miss Rossum on a film. He found her to work very hard. He said she was very nice and polite. He said he had heard from a good many producers, directors and actors, they like her. So, she has a good bit happening for her career things. I think she seems really nice. I hated the re-make of the ship sinking. I loved POTO. I think the entertainment papers out here are probably right. She is going to be a pretty big star in the next year or two. My dad says, “it is too bad people have to hate actors so much! They pick on them in such awful ways!” Doesn’t tearing somebody up seem pretty stupid! Just don’t go see them or listen to them. You have to take a lot of time to look people up you hate and then write bad stuff about them.
OMG I read in one of those trades, Rossum really is being offered a big, big budget Broadway lead. She is being offered those D-films. Four or five of them! Is this really happening? Give Keira the work. She needs more movies and good ones!
Producers/writers/actors were tellin g us about her Broadway lead and her many movies- before and after she announced it herself in several interviews lately. Can the producer tell us more about the show and the movies,too?
Certain sites seem to be under the impression “so many people hate her, it has to be true!” That is their opinion. It is a narrow, vicious one as usual. This small community of bored people have become a boring, trite little group who repeat themselves again and again. They can not see how many people do love ,like, or support Rossum. You can not do what she does, accomplish how much she has accomplished, and not have a h— of a lot of people with you. It doesn’t take brains to understand this. You can not function for years in this business IF this is true. You will always have people dislikme you and your work- for many logical reasons and many insane reasonshis group borders on insane.
Rossum turned down three Broadway roles. She has, however, been offered presently more roles from shows presently running! She has been offered a new leading role in a large musical drama, and will likely be on board next year. The film signings will also follow. This has been repeatedly discussed in interviews, trade papers, and sites. This will not be major release information until the tour has begun. Reasons are obvious. Anyone really within the industry knows well, Rossum is liked by the MAJORITY. She carries a LARGE fan base, not only on the internet. She carries a LARGE fan base via her mail/p.r. service, management, and agency. She attends to these letters warmly and personally. She treats people well. You may choose to dislike/hate her or believe she is disliked and unhired. The present and future will show an entirely different story. This N.Y. show wishes her every success. They have been hanging on to their trash for YEARS! Do they have no lives? They convinced me three years ago to like Emmy Rossum! Why don’t they go find a life. Poor little things. I already read the name of the Broadway show and two of the films. I say, Emmy, go for it!!!!
Since we are preparing to sign within a four week span, we would prefer not to offer titles to the films. Three are within signing. Two are in negotiations at the major studio where we hang our shingle. It does not matter if the negative fans feel Ms. Rossum is entering contracts or not. It does not matter if they feel she will never make that Broadway entrance. Many within the theatre world and film industry are quite aware of her negotiations. A secretary told us one of the sites felt we are ‘fake’ and represent a hundred different people on other sites. Sorry, we haven’t the time. One can appear pretentious ~if one discusses success, major releases, and stars. This is not our intention. It would seem a particular site against Rossum appears to be the pretentious group. Why would we bother with such sites? We watch fan sites and note how strong Rossum’s attraction is. It reads well. It reads powerfully within her direct mail support. It reads very powerfully within the industry. It is worth our moments in time ~if we feel compelling negatives are out there. They simply are not.
I am certain many on the anti-Emmy site/s have supported many of our major releases and stars. We always listen to “reasonable, logical” response to films or actors. Sites such as those which support ugly rumours or lies, are ignored.
Rossum’s career flag is high in the air. We are most proud to join dozens of others (who will be producing these projects). Press releases will be forthcoming.
She will be involved in two musicals, two dramas, and a thriller. This is the line-up for the moment. Other production companies are eager to bring her to the table. I think this sums up any questions asked by her fans here. Thank you.

Trades, interviewes,writers/producers, fansites, and more have offered it. Projects and titles have been discussed. Things are BEING SIGNED. That is when more is in the press. That is when it is discussed and titles offered (some have been) up. Tho it is a pop music release in a large market, her first CD is well received. It is unique (who cares what comparisons-a compliment) and she is very talented. The next CD (yes more to come) will offer yet another rich venue. As to the shows and films, anyone with a brain and really following her, has seen facts on the above information. The amount of hate out there for Emmy IS quite bizarre. While most of the girls who “hate” her are simply jealous that she got to play Christine Daae when they believe that they can sing better than she can. What they don’t seem to understand is that Webber himself helped chose her for the role, and he believe she was right for it. Therefore, it is pointless to argue that she “wasn’t good enough” like it’s a fact because:
1. it’s an opinion.
2. the movie has been out for years already. Get over it!
The “haters” that are the most moronic and annoying are definitely those that are under the impression that they are well-acquainted with her personality without ever having met her and are convinced that she is a bitch or whatever. What they don’t understand is that you can’t determine a person’s entire personality from a few interviews (as people can be misquoted and certain things can be taken out of context; it happens all the time), and so they should hold off on attacking her personally until they know her as well as her friends and family do (which I hope, for her sake, never happens!).
There’s nothing wrong with critiquing Emmy as a singer and an actress and even as a public figure (though she obviously presents herself very maturely and respectfully in public), but to bash her like those poor, pathetic girls do is ridiculous.

i have to agree Elisabette. I was not much of a fan. I did enjoy POTO stage and film. She was fine. I followed fan.com and online at times and the ES. I just read the diagreements there recently. Wild. ES just went too far. I agree that I would rather have been one of those who is passionately interested in an artist and over the top with care (and tobe fair, i don’t think most of those Emmy fans are anything but decent) than be someone who keeps going after someone. Well, what goes around, comes around, I always heard. Someone said today ES actually is using JIHAID EMMY or such. I think that is shameful. It means so bad, hurtful things to some. it is not a word to use now or about Emmy. I think that says a great deal that community. Emmy fans who go to extremes, may get pissed off, but they are usually nice, and they do not go after a person EVERY DAY and look for things to say about her or lie about her.

I think all the animosity directed at Emmy Rossum probably has less to do specifically with her (though i found her performance in “Phantom of the Opera” flawed and somewhat lacking), and more with the fact that women are traditionally much harder on their own kind.
Meaning, you have to kind of pay a ‘sweetheart tax,’ and if you’re not sweet, sincere and super-polite and deferential, both to peers and older sets, on your way up, then some folks make a notched memory on their scorecard, as it were. This is, after all, the same sort of problem that Angelina Jolie has, even before all the latest ‘homewrecker’ crap with Brad Pitt. She wasn’t embraced by (most) young women as ‘one of them.’
Now (apart from singing), I’m not saying Emmy has 1/2 of Angelina Jolie’s talent… she certainly hasn’t shown that. And she’s not overtly (sexually) threatening like Angelina. But it’s still an innately competitive thing, IMO. Women, as a rule, do not like other assertive women, or women they perceive as threats, those moving (real or perceived_) rapidly past their station in life.
I see no difference in bashing the immaculate Rossum or the Spears, Hilton, Lohan types. One could argue and say that “Yeah well, Emmy hasn’t done anything to self degrade her media image” True and she’s a very beautiful girl with a decent voice. It’s personal opinion whether this girl can actually act, sing, dance etc. It’s personal opinion whether she is beautiful. She could be offered all of the blockbuster movie roles in the world, and some people would still dislike her, that wouldn’t change a damn thing. I’m glad for her that she’s getting film and Broadway offers, good for her I say. Not everybody will agree with you unfortunately. We all know that even the most likeable person will have atleast one hater, whether they’re famous or not. Some may be fueled by jealousy of looks, talent, possessions whatever, but not everyone is neccessarily jealous. This is what people can’t seem to understand no matter what. Whatever the individual reasons these girls at these sites dislike her for, it’s their personal opinion. It’s not pathetic, it’s freedom of thought and expression. We all love George Bush don’t we? I can’t imagine why some people would hate this man so much. Oh nevermind they’re just jealous that he’s president of the United States.
Get what I mean? fans and haters shall continue to exist as long as there is someone to idolize or hate on. It’s show biz, why did I think that people within that industry especially would already know this?
1. Not all of us who say that the Emmy-bashing should stop are hypocrites like that. Personally, the worst I used to do as it concerns Paris Hilton and the like is rant to my friends about how awful those people are. But the whole Emmy-bashing thing really gave me a wake-up call. From seeing the way some of those girls behaved, I realized how incredibly unattractive bashing makes you seem, so I stop the “bashing” that I did, and I still haven’t resumed it.
2. “We all do it” is not a suitable excuse for that kind of behavior, at least not in my opinion. Lots of people do bad things, but that doesn’t make them right!
3. I don’t think it’s the opinions of these girls that people are upset with. Personally, I can easily accept that they don’t like Emmy. What bothers me is the way they present their opinions. If the site simply critiqued and commented on her acting/singing/fashion sense/public image, I could care less if they didn’t like her. What bothers me is when they do things like photoshop images of her (come on…you CAN’T claim that’s not immature and pathetic!) or other immature things such as that.
4. I don’t understand why people keep using Bush as an example for this type of bashing… It’s two TOTALLY different things. People hate/bash Bush based on his AGENDA and his public image. I don’t think people claim to know him personally. They hate him because he’s against abortion or gay marriage or because he sounds…not so intelligent when he talks sometimes. They don’t go around saying “oh yeah, Bush’s personality is this” and “you can totally tell that bush is REALLY like this.” What gets to me about the “Emmy-haters” most is that so many of them pretend to know her when they DON’T.
Personally, I dislike Bush because of the two reasons I mentions already: this agenda and the fact that he sounds like a fool way too often. I don’t HATE him, though. I don’t go around photoshopping photos of him or claiming to know for a fact that his real personality sucks.
Natalie, Emmy never called herself “underprivileged”. If you must spread nonsense, at least don’t LIE.
