Written by Eric Neumeier and Michael Miner, and directed by Paul Verhoeven with a hearty ribbon of satirical social commentary, 1987’s RoboCop is a touchstone film from its decade, as well as a pop-art genre hybrid — ultra-violent, but also surprisingly smart and thought-provoking. The new remake, starring Joel Kinnaman in the title role and Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman in key supporting roles, retains the near-future Detroit setting of the original movie but also uses the same basic conceit as a framework to explore the place of drones and militarized robotics in modern society, explains director José Padilha.
