Dreamgirls

Talk about a crowd pleaser. That its story is knowable and of a certain template is part of the spectacle, and thus part of Dreamgirls' appeal. It’s a dressed-up, showbiz-set, flamboyantly theatrical, macro-sized version of the same slings and arrows of occupational and personal indignity we all at some point suffer — the type of redemptive dream performance artists everywhere must have.
