Whenever societal parameters regarding violence or sex — but especially language — are discussed, the word “children” is dragged out like a giant piñata, with everyone wielding their own sense of righteously informed piety as a cudgel against the mores of others. While language frequently seems so big and above us that any parsing of it stands the chance of seeming unwieldy at best, foolhardy at worst, The Big Empty writer-director Steve Anderson found a good point of inquiry and attack for his first documentary feature: the most flexible expletive in the English language (with all apologies to bitch).
